Church History First Church of Christ, Scientist Wasilla, Alaska The healing activity of Christian Science has been known in the Matanuska
Valley area since the early 1940’s. A small group of earnest students of Christian Science held services
in their homes for a number of years. Active families were the Mahl’s from Goat Creek, and Dan and
Elsie Fleming in Palmer. The Heavers arrives in the valley in 1953. By 1955 an active informal group was meeting in Palmer in various locations. The
Farmers Co-op Building first and then in 1956 they moved to the Palmer Carpenter Hall. Sunday School classes
were also held at that time. The group now included Esther and Al Kirsch who lived in Palmer, and Mel and
Peggy Behnke from the Meadow Lakes area with their three children. Beginning
in 1960 the church services were moved to Wasilla, where the meetings were held in the public library building.
In 1975 a small building was purchased and placed in front of the existing library building. This
blessed both groups as it gave the library more space and it provided a place of their own in which the informal group of
Christian Scientist could meet. Formal recognition as a Christian Science Society
came in 1977. Land was also purchased that year and the building was moved on to it to be used until a
new church building could be built. Work on the new church building began in the spring
of 1978. Nearly all the work was done by the members themselves. The main auditorium
has a seating capacity of 50 persons. There are also rooms for Sunday School and a nursery. The Church was dedicated on May 10, 1987.
